The Canadian Project - NCFF |
The Northern Clergy Families Fund is the major project of the Canadian Mothers' Union. The fund was started in 1974 to help isolated clergy spouses serving in the Northern Dioceses. The original idea of the fund was to send a monetary gift so the spouse could take a holiday. That idea quickly changed when clergy spouses indicated that they needed the money for necessities.
Donations to the Fund come from MU branches, ACW groups, dioceses and individuals. Each gift sent to a clergy spouse is in the amount of $950.00, and she or he is free to use the money for their specific needs.
The recipients often tell in their thank you letters about the hardships of living in the North (or living in an isolated area) due to weather and the high cost of living as well as other factors. They often also mention how the money was an answer to prayers.
The coordinator for the NCFF
for the last four years, 2004-2008, was Mary Anne Dicks.
During her term of office 61 gifts of $950.00 each was
sent to clergy spouses in the Dioceses of Moosonee,
Brandon, Keewatin, Saskatchewan, and Eastern Newfoundland
and Labrador. The recipients are recommended by their
bishop upon the coordinator's request for names. The
new coordinator is Joan Titus of Sooke, BC.

THE MAKE A MOTHER'S
DAY CAMPAIGN
Canadian MU's Second National Project
The year 2011 will be
the second year that Canadian Mothers' Union will have participated
in the Make a Mother's Day ethical gift campaign. This campaign
originated in the UK four years ago and has been one of their
most successful. In 2010 five dioceses in Canada took part
in this campaign using a catalogue adapted for Canadian currency
and raised approximately $7000. Members and parishioners were
very enthusiastic and the campaign was very successful. In
2011 we hope that more dioceses will be taking part and that
the total can be doubled.
All the money donated
goes to support the three global MU programs
. The Literacy and
Development Program in Sudan, Burundi and Rwanda.
. The Family Life Program in Uganda.
. The World Wide Parenting Program in 13 countries including
Canada.
There are absolutely no
administrative costs. All the money is raised voluntarily
by MU members mostly in the UK or fundraising efforts by members.
We in Canada are anxious to play our part in supporting these
worthwhile endeavours. Catalogues and order forms are available
upon request by email from the Canadian President.

THE MOTHERS' UNION WORLDWIDE PARENTING PROGRAM
The Canadian Mothers' Union has recently initiated the
Mothers' Union Worldwide Parenting Program in one Canadian province, British Columbia, and is hoping to
extend it throughout Canada in the near future. It is our plan to train 12 facilitators at a workshop
following our National Biennial Conference in June 2010. Mrs. Sheran Harper, MU Workdwide Parenting
Program trainer from Guyana will be attending the conference and leading four full-days workshop.
We hope to have participants from many dioceses in Canada, who will be trained to lead a parenting
course in their home dioceses within six months of their training
The program has been
in operation in twelve countries, including the UK, Kenya,
the West Indies and Autrallia since 2000, and has been very
successful. It is designed for all parents, carers, social
workers, teachers or anyone involved with children, and is
participatory in nature. There are no experts and the facilitator
envourages to share their experiences and strategies, and
monitors the discussions. The sharing aspect makes parents
aware that they are not alone. that someone cares and inspires
them with confidence to try new things. The location is in
a community centre, a library or a school and is usually provided
by the recipients of the course. The course lasts from six
to twelve sessions of approximately two hours in length once
a week, with informative handouts and a homework focus. There
is no charge for the course. There are expenses incurred by
the facilitator such as travel and printing costs so doantions
are gratefully accepted.
Mothering Sunday
will be observed in Canadian Anglican Churches on Sunday,
March 18, 2012. Click
