About Us

Our vision is of a world where God's love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships.

Our Aim & Purpose is to demonstrate the Christian Faith in action by the transformation of communities worldwide through the nurture of the family in its many forms.

Our Mission:

  • To promote and support married life.
  • To encourage parents in their role to develop faith of their children.
  • To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
  • To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
  • To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

Mothers' Union Prayer

Loving Lord
We thank you for your love so
freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers' Union
as we seek to share your love
through the encouragement, strengthening
and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit,
may we be united in prayer and worship,
and in love and service reach out
as your hands across the world.
In Jesus' name. Amen.

History of the Mothers' Union

ActionImage
Mary Sumner began the Mothers' Union in England in 1876.

Mary Sumner began the Mothers' Union in England in 1876. As a clergy wife, she recognized the need for mothers to support one another in raising their children for God. Mary Sumner was the first Central President (International) of Mothers' Union. The Canadian Mothers' Union was established in London, Ontario in 1888. The first Canadian or National Council was formed in Winnipeg in 1919.

Mary Sumner Prayer

All this day, O Lord, let me touch as many lives as possible for thee;

And every life I touch, do thou by thy spirit quicken,

Whether through the word I speak,

The prayer I breathe, or the life I live. Amen.

Who can join the Mothers' Union?

If you are a Christian and believe in the importance of family life you should join the MU (men and women, married and unmarried, parent or not). To join you must have been baptized and agree with our Aim and Objects; membership is open to all denominations.

Canadian Wave of Prayer

The Canadian Mothers' Union is a society of prayer and mission. One of our strengths is our strong sense of prayer and we continually pray for one another. This is evidenced in our Canadian Wave of Prayer, where we pray for different dioceses and members of the society each day of the year during midday prayers.

Midday Prayers

We beseech you, O Lord, pour your grace into our hearts;
That as we have known the incarnation of your son, Jesus Christ,
By the message of an angel,
So by his cross and passion we may be brought to the glory of his resurrection;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, our heavenly Father,
We ask you to bless the work of the Mothers' Union throughout the world,
And especially in each diocese for which we pray today.*.....
Bless our members in their lives and in their homes,
That they, being strengthened in love to you and to each other,
May serve you faithfully to your glory; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Blessed Saviour, who at this hour hung upon the cross,
Stretching forth your loving arms,
Grant that all people may look to you and be saved;
Who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
Ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O Saviour of the world,
Who by your cross and precious blood has redeemed us;
Save us and help us, we humbly beseech you, O Lord.

*Every diocese at home and overseas is remembered in turn throughout the year.

Canadian Links

Each branch of the Canadian Mothers’ Union is linked to another Canadian branch and at least one international branch. Through letters or even e-mails, the members of these branches share in each other’s achievements, gain insight into other cultures and develop lasting personal relationships.

The Canadian Link Coordinator manages this intricate web of links. One of a new branch’s first tasks is to contact her for a link or two. Established branches also know to go to her for new links to add to or replace the ones they have already made.

In order to do her job, the Link Coordinator needs to have up-to date records, so please remember to contact her if:

• link communication is interrupted (she will investigate);
• the name and contact information for your branch or diocesan Link Coordinator changes;
• your branch goes into abeyance or is disbanded.

Indoor Member Prayer Circle

Some members of Mothers’ Union are unable to attend branch meetings for reasons of infirmity. The Indoor Member Prayer Coordinator ensures they feel involved and included in our world-wide family by keeping in touch. She sends each Indoor Member a card on Mothering Sunday and regularly renews their MU Prayer Diaries. Shirin is in the process of compiling a new list of Indoor Members and would be thrilled to make some new friends.

The IMPC coordinator's most challenging task is to keep her list of members up to date. She worries about her friends when the Post Office returns their cards and letters to her because the mailing address is incorrect or incomplete.

For that reason, she would appreciate it if Branch Leaders would send up-to-date lists of their Indoor Members with proper mailing addresses, including postal code, and birth dates if possible. She would also appreciate notification when an Indoor Member dies so she can amend her lists accordingly and not cause upset in the member’s family by continuing to send cards and letters.

Lone Members

Members of Mothers Union who live in areas without an active branch are part of a special group of Lone Members. The Lone Member Coordinator makes sure these members receive their Canadian Mothers’ Union newsletters and are notified of all the latest programs and initiatives. She also keeps these members in her prayers.

Any Lone Member in Canada who has not received information from the Lone Member Coordinator should contact Daphne Hinds, dhindes@mothersunioncanada.ca
or
1750 St. Louis, Apt. 216 Montreal, PQ H4L 5N4.
